Did You Know?
Blue Ridge Medical Center (BRMC) is a 501(c)(3),
not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving the
health care needs of residents of Nelson and Amherst
Counties and surrounding communities.
The health care offered at Blue Ridge Medical Center
is available to all people in the service area regardless
of race, ethnicity, language, age, income level, or
insurance status.
Each year we provide care for over 8,000 patients,
totaling nearly 47,000 visits at the medical center, in
the schools, and in the community.
Our pharmacy fills almost 4,000 prescriptions per
month. Through the Medication Assistance Program,
(MAP), the Pharmacy has obtained more than $1
million worth of free or low-cost prescriptions for
patients who qualify as low-income.
We have on staff 4 Family Practice Physicians, 2
Pharmacists, a Physical Therapist, 5 Family Nurse
Practitioners and 1 Mental Health Practitioner in
addition to our nursing and administrative staff.
The medical center has a doctor on call 24/7.

Oversight is provided by a Board of Directors
comprised of volunteer area residents, 51% of whom
are also patients of BRMC, (a federal requirement
for community health centers).
BRMC was awarded the Gold Seal of ApprovalTM by
The Joint Commission following an intensive on-site
evaluation of our health care standards.
The patient mix at Blue Ridge Medical Center reflects
the demographics of the communities it serves. About
70% of our patients have health insurance, with the
center accepting almost all commercial insurances,
Medicare, Medicaid, and state children’s health
insurance programs, BRMC offers a sliding fee scale
for individuals who qualify based on income level.
Patient fees are supplemented with revenues from
federal, state, and county resources, foundations,
individual donations and fund-raising activities to help
underwrite the cost of bringing health care and
outreach services to those in our community who are
in need. These resources include: federal funds,
Virginia Health Care Foundation, Virginia Community
Healthcare Association, United Way-Thomas
Jefferson Area, Charlottesville Area Community
Foundation, UVa Health System, Centra Health,
various civic organizations, area businesses, and
individuals.

Through the Rural Health Outreach Program, (RHOP),
we bring vital health care to those who are elderly,
homebound, handicapped, unable to drive, or in crisis.
In addition, RHOP addresses the special needs of
our Latino community.
Each year we sponsor the “Evening of Art, Music and
Cuisine” at Spruce Creek Gallery in the spring, and
the “Swing for Health” golf tournament in the early
fall. Both events are fundraisers to help support the
activities of the Rural Health Outreach Program.
With funding from Nelson County, RHOP also provides
a Registered Nurse in all Nelson County Schools,
every school day of the year.
In May 2008 we partnered with the Free Clinic of
Central Virginia, the Thomas Jefferson Health District,
and other members of the Nelson County Task Force
to open the Nelson Dental Clinic in Afton. This clinic
addresses the need for affordable dental health care
for people in our community who are uninsured or
who qualify as low income.
We are aware that health care demands in our service
area have increased to the point that access to
affordable health care could soon be compromised
for many area residents. The management, staff and
Board of Directors are actively considering options
for expansion of our facilities.
